I finally returned to Cabo de las Huertas this morning for a very peaceful walk and a bit of a nap. Not pictured here: a lot of nudity. (This secluded beach is frequented by nudists, who oddly enough weren’t around the first time I visited, on a freezing February night.)

Today we went to la Isla de Tabarca – the small (barely) inhabited island off the coast of Alicante. It is full of small sunny streets, stray cats, and unbelievably clear water. I want to come back with snorkeling gear.

Today for my intercambio we visited the campus of the University of Alicante today, where he works. I like the campus – it’s greener than anything else I’ve seen in the city. I miss the trees and grass of Michigan, especially in Spring.

(Also, bonus of visiting with a University employee? Tooling around in a golf cart… something I’ve longed for during my years of being a college student and student employee.)

My very politically involved school has appeared in a lot of Spanish media during the recent string of protests and strikes related to deep education cuts, as part of the current backlash against Rajoy’s austerity measures. Here they appeared in 20 minutos armed with their gigantic pencils at this week’s big protest in Valencia, during one of six scheduled strike days this month.

I have gone to a lot of manifestaciones here in Spain, and I am firmly supportive of peaceful protests everywhere – from the “Arab Spring” to the Occupy movements back home. However, I think it’s important to use the energy created by this collective flexing of our free speech rights and make sure we are participating in other ways that are more… preemptive? effective? engaged in the political process?

Indian food at a fantastic place that recently opened near my piso… a way to satisfy my sweet spicy tooth.

Recently I’ve been trying to practice night photography, as part of my attempt to stop (shamefully) shooting on auto so much with my big girl camera.

Our credentials for the Camino showed up. Just a little more than a month to go.

My afternoon.

Of late, Saturday night has become the night to run around on the beach with a tripod. This week we had our cameras focused on the sea when we noticed another type of light that had appeared at our backs. (It made me think of the night market in Detroit.)

El Barrio de la Santa Cruz, with it’s narrow streets and brilliant colors.
