The enlightening historical perspective of my day

Brought to you by the 3rd graders:

I was giving the 3rd grade teachers bathroom breaks during the MEAP, and was reading a book about one-room schoolhouses to the kids. We learned that in the days of yore, female schoolteachers had to be single. Once they got married they couldn’t be teachers anymore. “Why do you think they had that rule?” I asked the sea of furrowed brows in front of me.

One boy’s immediate response: “Because they would get too mad?”

Me: “What?”

Him: “Because married teachers would be too angry. Like if they had problems with their marriage, they’d get mad too easy.”

Well, well. Fascinating stuff!
