This picture – a typical visit to the Mona Lisa – is very representative of my experience of the Louvre.

It is a huge museum with a very impressive collection, and lots of beautiful and interesting things, but being among a the press of people rushing from one iconic work to the next – to pose in as many family combinations as possible – is not my favorite way to enjoy art. To be honest I would rather go to the Detroit Institute of Arts any day.

This is not to say that the Louvre isn’t worth a visit. You can even get in free if you are 25 or under, and a EU resident! Although I am currently a legal resident of Spain, I have now crossed the line into old age (or at least, not-young-age) in the eyes of the Louvre… and on Spanish railways, for that matter. This is a little disheartening.
