Los Arcos to Viana.

In Viana we stayed in another parochial albergue. After a very positive experience in our first parochial albergue in Estella (complete with communal American barbecue!) we began to plan on our stages so that we could stop in towns with parochial options. Normally these are donativo (where pilgrims donate what they can, rather than a set fee) and include a large communal meal and a communal breakfast the next day. In addition, since each is connected to a parish (in Viana, literally attached to the church) there is normally some kind of prayer service or blessing offered by the parish priest. Here, we were led into the dark choir loft of the church through a secret passageway from the albergue laundry room. (And by “secret” I mean I didn’t expect such an unassuming door to lead to the cavernous and mysterious silence of the old church.)
